When the Pentecostal Church was established in Mizoram, Sunday School was initiated immediately, following the example of the earlier churches (PCI and BCM). Consequently, Sunday School was set up wherever a church was established. At that time, Mizoram was just a single District. As the church continued to grow, on March 16, 1957, the Theiriat Circle Conference passed a resolution to request the missionaries (Saps) for a separate District or Sub-District for the southern region. Later in 1961, at the Thangte District Conference, a resolution to hold a separate District Conference was passed again. However, it appears that it did not immediately become a separate District or Sub-District. Nevertheless, as the church grew, church leaders pursued the request, and on August 29, 1965, Lunglei District was officially established. Initially, it was named South Mizoram District.
In 1975, with the creation of Chhimtuipui District, the name South Mizoram District seemed no longer entirely accurate. Therefore, from 1980 onwards, it was officially named Lunglei District. Sunday School operations continued alongside these changes, with text books and question papers initially arranged by the District itself. However, it was not feasible to have full departments from Beginner to Adult in every local church; while larger and more established local churches had all departments, most could not manage full attendance/departments yet. Today, Sunday School is held in around 116 local churches, and except for very small/struggling local churches, all departments are fully established—marking significant progress.
For a considerable time, Sunday School was directly managed by the main church body (Kohhranpui), and at times, decisions were made simply through Office Bearer meetings. From around 1990, proper Conferences began to be held, usually alongside the main church conference. Prior to 1975, textbooks were prepared independently by the District as best as possible. However, from 1975 onwards, textbooks have been organized under the North East India Sunday School Department. A more detailed history of the District Sunday School can be found in the Zirtirtu Puitu (Teacher's Guide).
We have also made gradual progress in financial matters. Currently, local churches constructing a Sunday School Hall are provided financial assistance of ₹10,000/-. Additionally, Awards of Honor are conferred upon those who serve in Sunday School (as Teachers or Office Bearers) for 25 consecutive years. In the previous term, former leaders also released the Zirtirtu Puitu (Teachers Manual). Furthermore, farewell gifts are presented to District Officials upon their retirement.
