Department History

The Pentecostal Youth Department, Lunglei District was officially established on May 21, 1966, following Resolution No. 13 of the South Mizoram District UPC Special Business Meeting (considered the 1st District Conference after the division of Lunglei District UPC), which accepted the proposal of dedicated members to form a district-wide youth department. Thus, May 21, 1966 marks the founding date of the District PYD. Leaders were elected immediately and began managing the District PYD on May 22, 1966. Initially, the department adopted the name ‘Pentecostal Conqueror’, following the youth organization name in the United States. However, due to political instability in Mizoram, using the term ‘Conqueror’ posed certain difficulties. Consequently, on March 21, 1969, the N.E. India UPC Executive Board resolved to change the name to ‘Pentecostal Youth Department’, a name it continues to bear today. SOME KEY INITIATIVES OF DISTRICT PYD: As the backbone of the church, the Lunglei District PYD has been immensely useful to the church since its inception. While it is difficult to detail every accomplishment, here are some key highlights:
  1. Blood Donation Calendar: By creating an annual Blood Donation calendar, Section PYDs donate blood to Civil Hospital Lunglei every year, contributing around 460 units of blood annually.
  2. Environment Protection: Under the District PYD Environment Protection Committee, regular tree-planting drives are conducted. Beyond planting, these trees are carefully nurtured and maintained. Several PYDs outside the main town have dedicated plantation sites and PYD parks. The department was even awarded 1st Prize for Best Planting Agency by the Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department. Furthermore, strong awareness campaigns against single-use plastics are conducted, ensuring zero plastic usage during PYD conferences and major gatherings.
  3. Anti-Drug Campaigns: Extensive measures are taken to keep youth away from drugs, including conducting surveys via Google Forms. Trainers' training sessions are held alongside anti-drug awareness programs across various locations, as well as simultaneous family night observances. Additionally, the department collaborates with the Pentecostal Children Department to protect children from substance abuse.
  4. Street Ministry: To help active drug users break free and turn to Jesus, the Street Ministry was launched in 2025. Volunteers provide food to youth struggling with addiction on the streets and lay hands on them in prayer. Plans are underway to expand and strengthen this ministry further.
  5. Felicitation Programs: Successful PYD students and newly employed members (Gazetted Officer level and above) are regularly honored and felicitated.
  6. Publication of Books: Books focused on social reform and moral ethics have been published, distributed to all Local PYDs, and studied during fellowship meetings.
  7. Missionary Support: The Lunglei District PYD currently supports 10 Missionaries under the General Missions Department.
  8. Bible College Support: The department provides annual financial support to Lunglei District PYD members currently studying in Bible Colleges.
