About BUNGTLANG CHHIMVENG LOCAL
HOW IT WAS ESTABLISHED :
When the Church was established before the insurgency in Mizoram, it was called Rawpui UPC. In 1955, a few people established the Church. The leaders at the time of the Church's inception were PC. Thangbawia, Robova, and Kawlhnuna.
OPPOSITION THEY FACED :
When the UPC was established on the Rawpui ridge, they faced opposition from sources such as the Village Council (VC), and they were not provided land for a church building. While they were in such a helpless situation, Upa Buibova, a Baptist Church Elder and father of Pu K. Aitluanga, generously carved out and donated the garden plot he was maintaining at Rawpui Damveng to serve as the UPC church plot. The site was leveled, and a bamboo-and-thatch church building was erected there. Before the insurgency in Mizoram, during the time when it was called the Southern Section (Chhim Bial), the Southern Section General Conference was hosted in this bamboo church building in 1964. Here, Pu Tebawnga and Rev. Darawia carried out ministry services. Pu Tebawnga even recounted a vision he received regarding events that would later transpire in the Saisih valley.
Furthermore, five (5) Local License holders emerged from this UPC Church. Today, some have passed away, while others were unable to continue their ministry due to hardships and had their licenses revoked. In 1966, Mizoram experienced insurgency. In 1967, people were regrouped into designated centers, with Bungtlang serving as a Grouping Center. A church building was constructed, and the regrouped residents from Piler village also shared our church building for a brief period. As the insurgency gradually subsided, the current site of our church building came under BRTF occupation. Once they completed their major works, we acquired the vacated site for our church premises. A bamboo church was built once again. In 1981, the church building was rebuilt. After being destroyed by a windstorm, we constructed the church again in 1987. Before it could be occupied for long, another windstorm destroyed it once more, prompting us to build it using corrugated iron roofing and tile walls. As time went on and the church building grew aged, construction on a new RCC church building commenced in 2019, which is now near completion.
REASON FOR BEING CALLED BUNGTLANG LOCAL :
As the insurgency in Mizoram gradually waned and the government permitted people to return to their former villages if they wished, several families moved back to Rawpui. They established churches, leading to the birth of Rawpui Local. On the Bungtlang side, community authorities assigned locality names, and those of us residing in Bungtlang came to adopt the name Bungtlang Chhimveng UPC. The unity within the church has been strong. Though occasional difficulties have arisen within the church family, God has not allowed His Church to perish. Today, we maintain great unity in the Church, with a membership of over 130. We currently have 4 Elders, 8 Lay Ministers, and 1 Retired Elder. Since many old records are no longer available, omissions or errors may occur, for which we sincerely ask for forgiveness.
