About KHAWHRI LOCAL

INITIATIVES FOR THE FORMATION OF THE CHURCH:

The UPC Church was established in Khawhri village as early as 1953, primarily founded by Pi Aihliri. Due to the outbreak of political insurgency, the villagers were relocated to Hnahthial in 1967, which led to the temporary disbanding of the Church. As time passed, the villagers returned to Khawhri in 1972, where everyone initially gathered together with the Baptist Church; from 1973 onward, separate worship services were established.

As previously mentioned, the Church was founded in 1953 without a church building of its own. After activities were interrupted by the insurgency, starting from 1972, members worshiped together with the Baptist congregation in a single building. During one of these services, Pi Thanghliri spoke and, touched by the Holy Spirit, proclaimed the glorious Covenant of the Lord. As a result, the Baptist congregation did not allow them to minister further; thus, beginning in September 1973, they began holding separate worship services.

From that time on, the Pentecostal Church became firmly established in Khawhri without fading, growing into a thriving church with around 80 members.

Due to the absence of available records prior to 1987, early leaders of the Main Church and its Departments cannot be listed here.

ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHURCH BUILDING:

In 1972, worship services were conducted jointly with the Baptist congregation in a Primary School bamboo-mat structure. In 1973, separate worship began, and in 1974, a small bamboo-mat building was constructed for the church. Around 1977/1978, another bamboo-mat structure was built at the current location of the Khawhri Community Hall. By 1985, as membership grew, an Assam Type church building was constructed at the site of the present church.

Subsequently, that church building was dismantled in 2014. Through the dedicated fundraising of church members, having raised around Rs. 3,00,000/-, construction of a new RCC church building commenced in May 2014. By 2021, the building was nearly completed and ready for inauguration. It is truly remarkable that this church building was constructed purely through the devotion of the members without taking any loans.

NOTABLE EVENTS IN THE CHURCH:

Being able to construct an RCC Church building measuring 60ft in length and 21ft in width without taking any loan is considered a miraculous and glorious manifestation of God's work for a congregation of around 80 members.
