About TAWIPUI N- II LOCAL
Early History and Origin of the Church
To provide clear clarity regarding the history and establishment of the church, it is beneficial to look back at its early background. During the 1959 Mautam (famine) year, J. Laltluanga from Thangte village and his companions carried out ministry work in Herhse village, where many accepted their teachings. Pu Hrangtlinga, Pi Chhinkung, Pu Aimawia, Pi Mangchiaii, Tv. Darkima, Tv. Sangvunga, and Tv. Lalhnara attended the UPC annual conference held at Mualcheng ‘S’ in March 1959. They were baptized by Rev. Zahlira, and upon their return, Tv. Darkima, Tv. Sangvunga, and Tv. Lalhnara compiled a list of around 50 individuals who wished to join the UPC. Included among those enrolled were active leaders of the Baptist Church, Pu Sapkunga and Pu Chhunkunga. A total of 50 members from the Baptist Church joined the UPC, with worship services initially held at Pu Lalkima's home. In April 1959, Sectional Pastor Rev. Zahlira visited, opening a baptismal service where 50 individuals were baptized in the name of Jesus.
The Sectional Pastor formally organized the local church leadership with the following appointments:
- Chairman : Elder Chhunkunga
- Secretary : Elder Sapkunga
- Treasurer : Elder Kapmanga
Construction of the first church building began and was occupied within the same year, 1959. Membership grew rapidly. Due to political insurgency and conflict, heavy armed clashes took place between MNF forces and the Assam Rifles near Herhse, leading to the forced regrouping of the village to Tawipui on September 30, 1968. Herhse was the first village to be regrouped at Tawipui, followed by other villages in 1969. The Herhse section was situated at the central area where a church building was immediately established. Church members from various regrouped villages—such as Thlengang, Mualthuam S, Thualthu, Tawipui, and Tawite—joined the congregation.
In 1970, to foster spiritual unity among the combined congregation, Rev. Chuauruma reorganized the church leadership as follows:
- Chairman : Elder C. Lalrinsanga
- Secretary : Evan. K. Lalzarliana
- Treasurer : Elder Sapkunga
Committee Members : Elder Chhunkunga, Elder Sawichhuma, Kapirha, Rokunga, Kapmanga, Dohmunga, Papuia, Aisanga (Thlengang), Malsawma (Thlengang), Tawklinga, Zachhuma, Lallawma, Paliana (Tawipui), Kapliana (Mualthuam), and Ngunirha (Thualthu).
Establishment and Growth of Tawipui-N UPC
From 1973 onward, the regrouped settlements began dispersing back or reorganizing, and the Herhse section was named Tawipui-N. On October 3, 1973, the church was officially established as 'Tawipui-N UPC'. At the time of establishment, the church had 80 members, which grew steadily to reach 330 members by 2025. From its founding on October 3, 1973, to the present day, the church has experienced great divine guidance. Despite facing significant internal and external challenges at times, the congregation has never experienced a church split, which remains a source of deep gratitude. Due to dedicated, hardworking leaders who faithfully sought God's guidance to protect the church against false teachings, the congregation avoided division even when neighboring villages and sections faced difficulties. Led by the Spirit of the Lord, the church continues to move forward in strong unity without discord or schisms, steadily growing through the diligent labor of devoted leaders.
