About MUALTHUAM SOUTH LOCAL
Establishment of the Church
Due to political unrest in the region, the village of Mualthuam 'S' was regrouped into Tawipui 'S'. While living in this regrouped village, Pu Thangthuama (L) was baptized in the name of Jesus. Upon returning to their home village of Mualthuam 'S', initiative was taken in 1972 to establish a local church. This initiative was led by Pu Thangthuama alongside the family of Pu Hrangnghilhlova, as well as Pu Kapliana (L) and Pu Buanhmunga (L) and their families—who had previously been baptized in Jesus' name and were already Pentecostal believers when they migrated together from Tawipui 'S'. They zealously conducted open-air preaching in the village square to build up the church. By the Lord's blessing, the local church was officially established in the spring/summer of 1972 with around 20 members.
Following the establishment of the Pentecostal Church in Mualthuam 'S', Evangelist V. Paliana and Rev. Ralianga continued evangelical work in the area. Consequently, Pu T. Hengduna (L) and his wife, Pu Zalawma (L) and his wife, Pu Chhunzova (L) and his wife, and Pu Aimawia (L) and his wife were baptized in Jesus' name and joined the Pentecostal Church.
Pioneer Church Leadership
The pioneer office bearers of the newly established church were:
Elder Thangthuama (L) was appointed as the first Chairman, Church Worker (Rbt.) T. Hengduna (L) as the first Secretary, and Pu Chhunzova (L) as the Treasurer. Under their leadership, the administration of the church was systematically organized.
Construction of Church Buildings
As the congregation grew, the need for a dedicated church building arose. Pu Bualhranga, an Elder of the Baptist Church, donated a plot of land near his residential garden for the church site. Late in 1972, the first Pentecostal church building was constructed using woven bamboo walls (mau rap). In March 1973, the Sectional Pastor, Rev. Chuauruma, officially dedicated the church. As church membership continued to expand, the church building was reconstructed around 1977–1979.
Re-opening as a Mission Field
During a period of strong numerical growth, several church members passed away, while others moved to different places due to marriage or family circumstances. Consequently, the once-flourishing Mualthuam 'S' Pentecostal Church faced a sharp decline in membership. By 1994, it became necessary to re-open Mualthuam 'S' as a Mission Field under the Lunglei District Mission Department.
In 1994, Bro. P.C. Lalhmingliana was stationed at Mualthuam 'S' as the first Evangelist under the Lunglei District Mission Field. After his one-year term, Bro. Lalringngheta served as Evangelist in 1995 for one year. In 1996, Evan. H. Lalthanmawia took over and served from 1996 to 2000; when he began his ministry in 1996, the church had approximately 36 members. With the establishment of the Mission Field and active ministry by full-time evangelists, the church experienced significant revival and growth. The Lunglei District Mission Department organized evangelistic crusades, while various church sections also conducted ministry visits and crusades. Through divine blessing upon the dedication of the workers, many new converts joined the church. In 1996, a new church building was built, which was officially dedicated in November 2000 by Rev. R. Lalrosanga.
In 2001, Evan. H. Lalthanmawia completed his tenure at Mualthuam (he was transferred to the Rotlang Field, where he served for one year before retiring in 2002). Evan. B. Kamliana succeeded him at the Mualthuam Field. After his one-year term, the Mualthuam 'S' Mission Field was officially closed in 2002.
Following the closure of the Mission Field, Evan. H. Lalthanmawia and his family returned to settle permanently in Mualthuam 'S' upon the earnest invitation of the local congregation, where they reside to this day.
In 2007, the church building was reconstructed once again and was officially dedicated on March 14, 2015, by Sectional Pastor Rev. P.C. Nghakliana. That sanctuary has since been dismantled, and a reinforced concrete (RCC) building is currently under construction on the site.
