About HRANGCHALKAWN LOCAL

INITIATIVES TO ESTABLISH THE CHURCH :

In 1989, when the family of Elder V. Zadinga (MRP) settled in Hrangchalkawn, the UPC had not yet been established in this village. Elder V. Zadinga felt a great burden for this and sought out Pi Saithanchhingi (Pi Saii), a 78-year-old former UPC Church member; together with five (5) members of V. Zadinga's family, they started worshipping at the O.C. Quarter. Shortly thereafter, the families of Pu H. Rothangliana, Pu K. Biakchhunga, and Pu Kawlthanga joined them, continuing their fellowship together.

A dilapidated police kitchen near the Police OC Quarter was repaired and used as a place of worship, while members were gradually gathered from around Lungpuizawl and the Vety Complex. Searching for a church site, they even began excavating a location in Lungpuizawl; however, due to various difficulties and inconveniences, it had to be abandoned. Services were then held at the vacant house of Pu Vanlalpeka in Lungpuizawl. In this manner, to establish the UPC Church in Hrangchalkawn, Elder V. Zadinga spearheaded efforts through various hardships and actively managed things for nearly a full year.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CHURCH :

As the year 1990 arrived, following the dedicated efforts of Elder V. Zadinga and those gathered, under the leadership of Rev. Saidawla, Headquarter Section Pastor, the United Pentecostal Church, Hrangchalkawn Local was established on 20.01.1990 at the rented Police Quarter of Elder V. Zadinga. The very first church leaders appointed were :

  • Chairman : H. Rothangliana
  • Secretary/Treasurer : V. Zadinga

ACQUISITION AND CONTINUOUS CONSTRUCTION OF THE CHURCH BUILDING :

The church was duly established, though at that time some defected for a while; however, very devoted members moved in during 1992, as the families of Elder Pc. Lalthankima and Elder F. Lalnghakliana joined, and Bro. Lalbiakliana's family also moved in, making the church much more delightful. Worship services formerly held at Pu Vanlalpeka's house in Lungpuizawl were transferred to Elder F. Lalnghakliana's house at the Irrigation Quarter. Having established a church, acquiring a proper church building became indispensable, and since the plot pursued in Lungpuizawl had to be abandoned due to various inconveniences, Elder V. Zadinga generously donated the plot he had previously bought for his own residential site to serve as the church site instead. Joyfully, the church building was constructed in 1993. Additional families including Pu Vanlaltlinga's family, Evan CS. Thasiama's family, and Elder Sailova's family from around the Lungpuizawl Vety Complex continued to join, increasing membership steadily, and in 2005, the Church Building was grandly inaugurated with a cattle feast. This church was built under the leadership of Rev. R. Lalrosanga, with great support from brethren in Theiriat. The PYD members from Zobawk also helped us during the excavation of the church plot.

During this time, although a number of members resided in Lungpuizawl, because the church building was somewhat distant and due to spiritual weaknesses, many were unable to reach the church building; despite the congregation's utmost efforts in holding dedicated Crusades right at Lungpuizawl, it bore little practical fruit, and members were lost occasionally. Working together with those from the Vety Complex, deeming it essential to preserve members, Lungpuizawl Local branched off from Hrangchalkawn in the year 2002.

Hrangchalkawn Local was left with barely thirty (30) members who remained steadfast. Meanwhile, in 2003, Bro. Lalruata's family moved in from Tawipui N-II, and in 2004, Pu Vanlaltlinga's family moved up from Vety Complex (Lungpuizawl), causing membership to rise slightly once more.

Since the church building was built merely as an Assam-type structure, it gradually began to deteriorate; it was extended by 6ft towards the Pulpit and occupied persistently for some time. Although long overdue for rebuilding, because the plot was rather narrow and steeply inclined, a search for another church plot was constantly conducted. After searching for a long time, Elder PC. Lalthankima finalized negotiations to purchase a central plot on the upper side of the road in Hrangchalkawn. Revenue officials came to settle boundaries, but as the exact area intended for purchase turned out to belong to Pu Zokaia from Aizawl, we shifted slightly further up, measured the intended purchase area with the landowners, and Elder Pc. Lalthankima paid Rs. 2,00,000/- of his personal money for the plot; in return, the old church site was handed over to Elder Pc. Lalthankima who bought the new site.

The new church site was measured on 14.11.2012, and on 26.11.2012, a work drive of 21 members cleared the land. On 27.11.2012, a JCB was hired for five (5) hours to cut an access road. The building site excavation continued for two (2) more days, completing the plot preparation. Continuous vigorous work drives were held to carry in construction materials; since everything had to be carried by head load from the road, we experienced great fatigue. On 13.08.2013 (Tuesday), post hole digging commenced; on this day, Rev. C. Vanlalena, District Secretary, led the devotion, accompanied by Rev T. Aichhunga, Theiriat Section Pastor. From Theiriat local, Elder Zakiana, Sis. Nunmawii, Sis. Lalhriatpuii, and Evan. C. Remruatkima also joined in our work drive.

We are deeply grateful to various Locals within Theiriat Section who assisted us throughout the church construction. As the old church building had become severely dilapidated, we eagerly anticipated moving in, but lacking sufficient funds, a loan of Rs. 3,00,000/- was taken from Apex Bank. Elder Pc. Lalthankima continuously spent considerable personal funds, and from the District, we received Rs. 42,580/- for roofing on 24.02.2014. Elder Pc. Lalthankima spent another Rs. 35,000/- for painting and Rs. 1,60,000/- for the steel structure roof out of his personal funds; the total personal money he spent for building the church cannot be fully calculated. Every family put forth their utmost efforts, and after pressing forward diligently, we began occupying the church building on 21.09.2014. Though occupied, since the dedication program had not been held—and as we desired an inauguration with a feast while simultaneously facing loan repayments—accumulating savings was very difficult. Finally, on 10.10.2016 (Monday) at 11:00 am, the church was inaugurated. It was dedicated by Rev. C. Vanlalena, District Treasurer, with Rev. VL. Hmuaka, Theiriat Section Pastor, chairing the service inside the church, followed by a feast in the evening.

The reason the dedication day fell on a Monday was that the Section Mission Conference was hosted at Hrangchalkawn Local from Dt. 07.10.2016 – Dt. 09.10.2016, so the church inauguration was conducted immediately on Monday. On the inauguration day, performances by the District Choir, individual solos, and various reports were heard; the financial report presented by Elder Pc. Lalthankima reported that approximately Rs. 12,00,000/- was spent on the church construction.
