About SERTLANGPUI LOCAL

Sertlangpui village is located between Lunglei and Buarpui, approximately 50 km north of Lunglei. It consists of about 100 households with a population ranging between 500 to 600 people, and has three churches: Baptist, UPC, and IKK.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UPC :

In November 1963, a team of dedicated individuals from Haulawng led by Pastor Zabuaia, including Malsawma, Lalhlira, Kamlova, and T. Bualzika, arrived at Sertlangpui to establish the UPC Church, and the UPC Church was duly established on 15th November 1963. On this occasion, around 26 people received baptism in the name of Jesus immediately. Prior to this, Pu H. Sangzuala had already been baptized while serving as a teacher in Thenhlum village, making him the first person from Sertlangpui village to be baptized in the name of Jesus. The members at the inception of the church were H. Sangzuala, Taithuama, Thanzuala, Laltawnga, Hautlaia, Lalsiama, Dengkhuma, Dawlpinga, Chhiarkunga, Thanseia, Zasiami, Laldengi, Hualkungi, Biakliani, Zasangi, Saikhumi, Lalhmuaki, Rozama, Lalchuailova, Lalrawngbawla, Lalzarmawia, Lalrinawma, Rochhingpuii, Chalbuangi, Saithuami, Ngaihzuali, and Lalremi.

EARLIEST CHURCH LEADERS :

The first church elder was Elder Thanzuala. The early leaders included Elder Thanzuala, Taithuama, Laltawnga, Hranghlira, Dawlpinga, Hautlaia, and H. Sangzuala. Hranghlira joined while serving as a Baptist elder.

CHURCH BUILDING :

When the church was established, building a church structure immediately was not feasible due to the small membership; therefore, they held worship services at the homes of Pu Laltawnga and Pi Laldengi. Construction of the very first church building began in 1964. During the insurgency and burning of villages in 1966, this church building was also burnt down. After the regrouping of villages in 1972, a temporary structure was erected, and a proper church building was constructed again in 1974. In 1991, a powerful cyclone blew the church down. Lacking a church building, the congregation held services in rotation across various members' homes. During the autumn of that same year, a temporary shelter was set up on the present Pastor Quarter hill. In 1994, the church was reconstructed for the 3rd time at the present church location (which was previously a Primary School site; the 1991 Cyclone had blown down the Primary School, and it was relocated near the Middle School). As time progressed and the congregation continued to grow, construction of our current church building began in 2009 for the 4th time. Thus, a regular church building has been constructed 4 times, alongside 2 temporary structures.

DEPARTMENTS :

1. Ladies Auxiliary Department (LAD) : As time went on and the church experienced numerical growth, the Ladies Auxiliary Department was established on 20th March 1974. The first President was Sist. Sangkungi.

2. Pentecostal Youth Department (PYD) : In 1973, a youth wing named 'Conqueror' was formed with Zasiami as its first President. Due to the absence of male members, it was renamed LAD the following year in 1974. After some time, on 11th October 1977, the PYD was newly re-established. The first President was Hmarchhinga. In 1982, they successfully hosted the District PYD Conference.

Including the current residence, the Pastor's Quarters has been constructed 3 times (the hill where the Pastor's Quarters stands was formerly known as Pu Tila's house hill).
