About RANGTE NORTH LOCAL
Rangte Village :
Rangte village was first settled in the year 1952. At that time, it was under the chieftainship of the Lungsen Chief, Lalsavuta. In 1954, after the Government of Mizoram abolished the chieftainship system, a Village Council (VC) was established, and the community continues to be administered under VC leadership to this day.
Origin of the Church :
By February 1962, as a farming community, every household was extremely busy clearing jhum fields. No one had time to pay attention to guests entering the village. The visitors went to the house of Pu Luaia (Baptist Church Secretary), who welcomed them warmly. The guests simply mentioned that they were revivalists (mi hlim). At that time, the Baptist Church was the only existing church in the village. During service time, these revivalists spoke briefly, and after a short stay, they returned home. In August 1962, the revivalists reappeared; they were Pastor Chuauruma, Evan. Laltluanga, Liankhuma, Lalnunthara, and Tlanglawma. During this visit, they made great efforts, interacting with whoever they could, visiting mothers staying at home, and engaging deeply in houses where they felt familiar. During church services, although not officially invited to preach, they took opportunities to share brief messages, becoming much more familiar with the villagers. When Sunday arrived, they invited people for fellowship; as fellowship meetings grew, their audience expanded significantly. Eventually, word reached the Baptist Church authorities. They sent Evangelist Sanga, who was serving at Rotlang (Chhumkhum), followed by Pastor Sialngena and Pastor Hrangchhingpuia. They engaged in scriptural debates with the revivalists but could not refute them. Having failed, top leaders from the headquarters came in person, but it brought no resolution.
Establishment of the Church :
The ministry of Pastor Chuauruma and the revivalists deeply impacted the village, and several people wished to join the UPC. As candidates wanted to be baptized, a baptismal site was opened for the first time nearby at the Damte stream. The first to receive baptism were: Hc. Rualkhupsanga, Neihkima (Neihmunga), LH. Lalkipsana, Sanninlova, and Rangkipthanga. Shortly after, baptism was administered again, with many others receiving baptism led by Pu Lalkipthanga. On September 16, 1962 (Sunday), a service was held at the house of Pu Neihkima, marking the birth of the UPC Church in Rangte village. At its inception, the church had 33 members. Following the establishment of the church, its first office bearers were appointed under the leadership of Pastor Chuauruma, namely: Lalkipthanga, Rangkipthanga, Hc. Rualkhupsanga, Neihkipthanga, and Neihkima (Neihmunga).
With the church established, a church building became necessary. In 1963, the first church building was constructed using bamboo (Maurap), and in 1967, it was rebuilt again with bamboo. In the same year, due to the Mizo insurgency (political disturbance), residents were regrouped to Lungsen. When they returned from the Lungsen regrouping center in 1972, instead of immediately occupying the main Rangte village, they lived near the village (naming it Thlawh bawk) and built the church for the third time. In 1973, they reoccupied Rangte village proper, and a church was constructed at the current location of Pu Pc. Lalbiakthanga's plot. In 1975, a new church was built at our current site using round timber for posts. In 1981, it was rebuilt using sawn timber, and in 1994, it was renovated again using sawn timber. In 1996, a cyclone destroyed the church building, so a temporary bamboo structure was erected for services. In 1998, it was rebuilt again with sawn timber. In 2005, plans were made to construct a permanent RCC building, leading to the current structure, which measures 60 ft in length and 30 ft in width.
Reason for the Name 'Rangte North Local' :
As time went on, the membership grew, approaching nearly 500 members. Expecting further growth, on January 29, 2006, the 1st Church Board Committee under Resolution No. 1 decided that Rangte UPC Church should be divided into 2 local churches. After informing the Section Pastor, on March 19, 2006, under the plan and leadership of Section Pastor K. Lalchamliana, the single local church was divided into two. The newly formed local church was named 'Rangte South Local'. Since having two locals made the name 'Rangte Local' impractical, as per Resolution No. 1 of the Church Board Committee on June 18, 2006, it was renamed 'Rangte North Local'. At the time of preparing the 2025 report, there are currently 363 members.
