About SESAWM VENGCHHAK LOCAL
ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CHURCH:
On May 30, 1993 (Sunday), during the joint decision meeting of the District Pastor and the church body, it was agreed to divide the Sesawm UPC Church into two separate churches. On May 31, 1993 (Monday), the church was given a name and separate services began. The first day of worshiping separately under an official church name with the approval of the District Pastor (May 31, 1993) is accepted as the founding date of the church. Prior to this, there was only one UPC church in Sesawm, known as 'Sesawm UPC'.
THE CHURCH BEFORE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SESAWM VENGCHHAK CHURCH:
In the year 1964, the UPC preacher Pu Tebawnga arrived, and many joyful people in Sesawm accepted his message. On March 15, 1964 (Sunday), the UPC was established in Sesawm village. A baptismal service was opened at the Sehung stream, where baptism took place. The first people from Sesawm to be baptized in the name of Jesus were: Pu Lianhrima, Pu Lalhliapa (father and son), Pi Zairemthangi (granddaughter of warrior Sawibunga), and Pu PC. Rothuama. Thus, the Sesawm Pentecost Church began to take root.
CHURCH BUILDING:
- When the church was first established, services were held at Pu Lianhrima's house. The very first church building was a granary (Chhekin) donated by Upa Dengbuaia for worship services.
- The second church building was constructed with wooden posts, thatched with bamboo leaves (Di), and the benches were gathered from raw bamboo. During the Zoram political insurgency in 1966, the villagers fled to the jungle. Although there was a desire to spare the church building during the burning of the village, the fire spread and destroyed it.
- After fleeing in 1966, the village was re-established in 1968. A makeshift church building was built using small bamboo/wooden poles and roofed with Laisua leaves. In 1969, the village was grouped together again, and the village was deserted once more.
- Before returning, the congregation worshiped together with the Thenhlum Local at a single church in Kawnpui 'W'. In 1972, people started returning to their home village, and the early returnees to Sesawm worshiped at Upa Rothuama's house. In 1973, the fourth church building was rebuilt.
- In 1978, an Assam-type church was built using sawn timber. The roof was made of bamboo matting and Saphuhawna leaves, while the walls were made of woven bamboo. This church building underwent continuous improvements, including roof replacements, and stood until after the division into two Local churches.
THE BIRTH OF SESAWM VENGCHHAK CHURCH:
On May 30, 1993 (Sunday), the Sesawm Local Church Board voted by raising hands to divide into two churches. With the acknowledgment of District Pastor Lalchhara, the division of Sesawm Local into two came about without any prior concrete plan. As an official church name was needed quickly, and the District Pastor did not immediately know what names to assign to both locals, he requested the PYD District Secretary/Treasurer Upa H. Thangkunga to name the church.
Since the name 'Sesawm UPC' could no longer be used alone, Upa H. Thangkunga named it 'Sesawm Vengchhak' based on the traditional geographical locality of the village, without leaving either side as the sole bearer of the old name. Thus, the United Pentecostal Church, Sesawm Vengchhak Local came into existence. Reasoning that 'if there is a Vengchhak (Upper Veng), there must be a Vengthlang (Lower Veng)', the other was named Sesawm Vengthlang Local. From May 31, 1993 (Monday) onwards, separate worship services began. Sesawm Vengthlang Local retained and occupied the existing Sesawm UPC church building, while Sesawm Vengchhak Local worshiped at the home of Bro PC. Zoliana, who was the Local Treasurer when the church was established. At the time of its formation, Sesawm Vengchhak Local had 95 members.
THE FIRST CHURCH BUILDING:
Sesawm Vengchhak Local did not come into being out of pure choice, but resulted from certain administrative circumstances within the church. At its inception, the church had no assets. We had no drums (khuang) to sing joyfully together; we used plastic containers and kerosene tins as drums. We had no gong/bell to ring, so we struck metal plates instead. Having no church building initially, we worshiped at Bro PC. Zoliana's home for a long time.
Knowing the need for a church building for the newly formed congregation, we raised funds as best as we could without neglecting other commitments. An Assam-type building measuring 30 feet in length and 15 feet in width was constructed at the current church site. Building materials like tiles and tin sheets were transported via community labor (hnatlang) all the way from Marpara. After completion, District Pastor T. Bualzika dedicated it for the worship of God's people. Because the plot was on a slope, the ground was leveled manually by hand through community labor. This first church building served for 21 years (1994–2015) before being dismantled in 2015.
THE SECOND CHURCH BUILDING:
Our current church building measures 57 feet in length and 24 feet in width, constructed out of concrete. During the first community work drive to excavate and expand the site for the new building, 142 members (including children) participated. Out of a total membership of just over 170, the turnout was remarkable. It was constructed enclosing the old building and was occupied starting in 2015. Only around five lakh rupees (₹500,000) was spent to build our current church, which stands as a testament to the immense amount of voluntary community labor contributed.
On March 12, 2016, District Pastor R. Lalramhluna dedicated the building for those seeking to draw near to God and rededicate themselves. The church dedication was celebrated as grandly as possible. All locals within the Bunghmun district and all members from the Thenhlum district were invited, and the entire village celebrated with a grand community feast.
