About HNAHTHIAL SECTION

History of Hnahthial District (Bial)

Hnahthial Town

Hnahthial town is situated on the ridge east of Lunglei and west of the Tuichang river. Located along National Highway 54 (Lunglei to Aizawl), it is 68 km away from Lunglei. Serving as a District Capital, it comprises over 1,500 households and a population exceeding 7,500. It is a highly literate town with a literacy rate of 97.24%.

Hnahthial District (Bial)

Hnahthial District was formed in May 1966 by the District Board, appointing Rev. Ralianga as its first minister in charge. At that time, it was known as 'Tarpho District' rather than 'Hnahthial District'. This was likely because Tarpho was the early center of the UPC establishment and the residence of the presiding minister, Rev. Ralianga.

Initial Territorial Jurisdiction

During this period, the district's boundary extended eastwards to include Cherhlun and Thingsai entirely, northwards to Bungtlang (Pangzawl District), and southwards reaching Leite, S. Vanlaiphai, and Muallianpui.

Origin of the Name 'Hnahthial District'

Due to the effects of the Mizoram insurgency and the forced regrouping of villages, residents of Tarpho and surrounding areas were regrouped into Hnahthial. Consequently, what was previously called Tarpho District came to be known as 'Hnahthial District'.

History of the Pastor Quarters

Administered as the Hnahthial District from 1971, Section Conferences were initiated, with Rev. Ralianga continuing as the first District Pastor. During his tenure, Rev. Ralianga managed the district from his personal home without a separate official pastor quarter. In 1979, the current plot at Peniel Veng along NH-54 was requested from the Village Council, which granted the land prompt approval.

Construction efforts began immediately. Despite task assignments given to various local churches within the district, progress was slow. Construction continued gradually through 1980 until 1981, when it became habitable. Rev. C. Darnghaka and his family were the first occupants. This initial pastor quarter was a traditional bamboo (Maurap) structure with a thatched roof.

On March 22, 1986, Section Conference Resolution No. 1 decided: 'The Pastor Quarters shall be relocated to Tarpho Veng, and the Tarpho (H) Local Church Board shall select a site.' However, as the Tarpho (H) Local Church Board could not find a suitable plot, the matter returned to the Section Board, which resolved to rebuild on the original site. On March 28, 1987, the Section Conference noted the residence's deterioration and set fundraising targets for reconstruction, directed by the Section Board. Following up in 1988 with additional targets, an Assam-type building was constructed under the tenure of Rev. Lalchhara.

On February 22, 1992, the Section Conference decided to expand the Pastor Quarters toward the front and sides. Following up in 1993, a Committee Room was created underneath, with ongoing functional improvements.

On February 5, 2000, Section Conference Resolution No. 7 mandated a full reconstruction using a Concrete/RCC structure. Financial targets were set and pursued through 2001–2002. On Monday morning, September 29, 2003, the first community work session (straightening rebar) commenced. Under the leadership of Rev. C. Vanlalena, a 36 x 21 Semi-Pucca building was completed, establishing a proper quarters that continues to be occupied today.

Subsequent enhancements were made to the downstairs Committee Room and structural framing through district initiatives. As the church expanded, major structural repairs became necessary, leading to a grant application to the District Board. On December 12–14, 2022, the District Board granted Rs. 8,00,000 (Eight Lakhs) for repairs. This funded floor slab work, top rain-gutter casting, and reinforced concrete wall masonry, bringing the quarters to its present state.

Districts Formed Out of Hnahthial District

Over time, as the church grew significantly alongside its membership, new districts were carved out as follows:

Thingsai District: The 11th District Conference (Resolution No. 4) approved dividing Hnahthial District to inaugurate Thingsai District in March 1976. However, after being merged into Cherhlun District in 1983, Thingsai District was officially reorganized from Cherhlun in 1999.

Cherhlun District: In 1983, the Thingsai Pastor Quarters was relocated to Cherhlun, leading to the creation of Cherhlun District.

Pangzawl District: The 1985 District Conference authorized a division of Hnahthial District to establish Pangzawl District.

S. Vanlaiphai District: The 50th District Conference in March 2015 (Resolution No. 11) approved opening a new district across Tuipui river centered at S. Vanlaiphai, forming S. Vanlaiphai District out of Hnahthial District in 2015.
